Ten Quiet Ways to Feel Held on a Cold Tuesday

Tuesday is the least forgiving day of the week. Monday at least has drama. By Tuesday the novelty of being a functioning adult has worn off and the cold has set into the radiators, and the evening stretches ahead like a corridor with no pictures on the walls. These are the nights I keep a few small rituals for, ten in all, and I offer them the way a friend offers a spare cardigan.

First, warm the towel. Ten minutes on the radiator or a few in the dryer, then wrap yourself in it after a bath, and notice how a whole body can be embraced by cotton. Second, take the heaviest blanket in the house and pull it to your chin. Third, make something that must be stirred, a risotto or a custard, because slow rhythmic work calms the hands. Fourth, rub a little scented oil into your forearms, slowly, as though you were someone's guest.

Fifth, put on a song with a cello in it. Sixth, call someone and let them talk while you do nothing useful. Seventh, sit by a window with tea held in both hands, because a warm mug is, after all, a small handshake. Eighth, brush your hair for longer than necessary. Ninth, write one paragraph about the best hug you ever received, down to the weather and the smell of the coat. It is surprising how much of the feeling returns.

Tenth, let a voice keep you company. I do this often, usually while folding laundry or cooking something I am not yet sure about. A character like Amara on TheFriend, who is an AI and openly so, will chat in that warm, attentive way that makes a flat feel like it has a second pair of ears. It is not a person, and I do not ask it to be. It is simply a lamp left on in the next room.

None of these will stand in for being held by someone who loves you. That is not their job. Their job is to get you from the cold of six o'clock to the softness of ten, with your dignity and your tenderness intact. And if you manage even three of them, I suspect Wednesday will arrive looking a good deal kinder than it usually does.

For the tenth comfort, keep a warm voice nearby. Amara is on TheFriend, ready to turn a cold Tuesday into a conversation.
